This story from the New York Times is interesting for the hugely diverse reactions from the "authorities". Either the family are quaint "little house on the prairie" types, or wicked, child-endangering parents with undeveloped, mentally unstable children. You decide.

It's obvious, though, that the police do NOT like "invisible" off-the-grid types!

Apologies for over-use of parentheses....

Fascinating article,

Fascinating article, certainly worth the read.

Sounds like the "authorities" are trying to put a good spin on forcibly reforming a family to fit snugly into the modern mold of what a family "should" be.

another story

i recently read another article somewhere (can't remember where i saw it though) about a middle aged man who inherited 35 acres of land. This land has been in his family for generations. Anyway he lived on this land in a trailer with a composting toilet and no running water or electricity. he's been doing this for about a decade. He's completly self sufficient, brings water in and says he doesn't need electricity. He owns 2 horses and a dog.no children are involved.

The state has decided that this is "inhumane" and is forcing him off his land and taking his animals! the Animals are healthy. so what's the problem...

Well i guess the government doesn't like the fact that he's not paying for water or electricity.(my opinion) and what better way to force someone to conform to society's demands...

bunch of Bull if you ask me...

Crazy times I was told today

Crazy times I was told today that basically my electrictity supply would be cut off if I didn't open a bank account and give them the details, apparently if you don't provide them with a bank account they can impose a hefty deposit requirment on you. I had murder on the phone its disgraceful they are effectivly trying to force me to have a bank account in order to have electricity, I supposedly have 3 day before they cut me off I've spent the last 3 years studing law so we shall see how this works out....

I hear

I heard that even if you produce your own electicity you have to sell it to the Grid, then buy it back.
As for the Family living off the Grid. I'm guessing there is a backstory that we will never know. We are all indoctrinated into some kind of Society from birth, we're never given an opt out policy , and those that do try to exist outside are always mistrusted.
I'm not saying anything you all don't Know already- but it does feel good to know that other people have similar thoughts ;>

In America, if we produced

In America, if we produced our own power, we had the option of selling any extra power to the Grid. Now, I believe it's mandatory. It's insane.

The insane thing is that

The insane thing is that those who produce extra power would not want to share it with everyone else, what reason would you have to keep it for yourself? Perhaps a profit could be made for the surplus energy…or rather one could just feel good about helping society ease their burden just a little bit…

Well, as it is very difficult

Well, as it is very difficult to 'store' the excess power, selling it is probably your best option tbh.
